About the Department of Anthropology

Registration

Q: How do I register into a class that is closed?
A: - Contact the instructor via email and ask permission to enroll
- Provided the instructor agrees, print out the email confirmation
- Bring the email to the main office in Howard Phillips Hall 309 and ask for an "override."
- Fill out the necessary paperwork with the help of the staff
- Bring the complete packet to the College of Sciences Academic Services Office

Q: Can seniors take graduate level courses?
A: Absolutely, yes. However, seniors are only granted admission if their GPA is over a 3.0 and their course load for that semester does not exceed 12 credit hours (including the graduate course). Additionally, they should be within nine hours of graduation. The Chair of the department can make exceptions to these requirements, but only on a case-by-case basis. Careful consideration should be made before taking a graduate course as an undergraduate. Interested students should speak with instructors to discuss the workload and course rigor before enrolling. After the instructor agrees, students follow the same procedure noted above for overrides to complete enrollment.

Exams - Make-up & Exit

Q: How do I schedule a make-up exam?
A: - Speak with the instructor of the course (preferably through email)
- Provided the instructor agrees, call the department (407-823-2227) to schedule the make-up
- Bring the email confirmation from the instructor with you to the appointment
- Bring any required materials (scantrons/documentation)

Q: How do I register for the Exit Exam?
A: - File an intent to graduate during the semester of degree completion
- Ensure your email address is correct in MyUCF
- The department will contact you via email when the exit exam opens (typically the last two weeks of the semester)
- Call the department (407-823-2227) to schedule an appointment to take the exam

Q: How do I study for the Exit Exam?
A: The exit exam contains information from the following courses: ANT 2000, ANT 2100, ANT 2410, and ANT 2511. To help students prepare, the department offers a wide range of textbooks for students to review ahead of time. Please email anthro@mail.ucf.edu to notify us if you'd like to schedule an appointment in order to study from the department's textbooks. Students can reference the department's textbook collection by clicking here.

Q: What is the Exit Exam?
A: The Exit Exam is an assessment of past learning and does not prevent your graduation, unless you fail to take the exam entirely.

Letters of Recommendation

Q: How do I obtain a letter of recommendation?
A: Please review our guide to obtaining letters of recommendation from the department faculty (Letters of Recommendation Document).

Other Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I purchase copies of posters displayed in the department?
A: We do not sell any of the posters on display, but students wanting to purchase them are encouraged to contact the UCF College of Sciences' Technology Office at cosweb@mail.ucf.edu.

Q: Is the computer lab open to all students?
A: The computer lab is a resource provided by the department to all students majoring in Anthropology. While the computers do not have the ability to print, they do have Internet and email access. Additionally, these computers also have ArchGIS installed and Google Maps, which several courses in the major require. The lab is open as long as the main office is open.

Q: Can the staff advise on program requirements?
A: The staff is not allowed to advise on program requirements because they are not Anthropologists. However, students are welcome to contact either the Undergraduate Advisor or the Graduate Advisor for advice. The staff can advise on UCF policy and procedure as it relates to program requirements. For questions on university policy and procedure, students should defer to the College of Sciences Academic Services Office.
